Partial Credit

Migrant students benefit from counselors taking a very active role in placement and credit accrual decisions. The granting of partial credit is strongly encouraged by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) (see memo below).

The Office of Secondary Education for Migrant Youth (SEMY) staff provides partial credit accrual training and technical assistance at the high school level. If you have questions, call SEMY at (509) 836-7500.

Here are some great printable, credit granting resources which enable high school educators to support the graduation of migrant students:

      Recommended Placement and Withdrawal Procedures

      Partial credit - a four page summary

      Partial credit leaflet - a handy reference utilized when providing technical assistance. Covers why, what, how and includes models currently implemented by schools. Referenced in this document is the importance of the withdrawal form. A sample withdrawal form is obtainable at www.msdr.org.

Other resources available:

PASS Program - a semi-independent study program which ships curriculum to educators for use by credit deficient students; courses generally shipped free of charge for migrant students residing in Washington State.

Interpreting Mexico credit - a workshop conducted by SEMY staff for educators of migrant students. Call the SEMY HELP Desk at (888) 727-7123.

Assistance in gaining access to educational documentation necessary when traveling to/from Mexico. Review the Binational Transfer Document (for Mexico/US students in grades 1-9) or the Request for Apostille (students in grades 10-12) at the MSDR office website www.msdr.org. Call MSDR at (800) 274-6084 or SEMY at (888) 727-7123 if you have questions.

Asstance in gaining access to individual migrant student records with a cumulative history of unresolved coursework and credit accrual. Workshops and passwords to MSIS, an online student database, are available in Washington State to educators/counselors of migrant students by calling the Migrant Student Data and Recruiment Office at (800) 274-6084.
