About SLP

The Student Leadership Program (SLP) focuses on supporting the educational success of migrant youth through development of leadership skills.

Conference Events.
SLP combines nationally recognized curriculum which is aligned with Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements and staff trained in student-centered learning to conduct leadership conferences. Students learn to set goals, solve problems, work as a team, communicate and make decisions. Students often conduct local service-learning activities and receive local high school credit for participation in SLP activities. Compared to a national 50% graduation rate, close to 80% of SLP conference participants graduate. Students say that SLP leadership development activities are “empowering and life changing.” Check out Student Quotes.

Local Support/Capacity Building.
Local school staff, community members, parents and students actively participate with SLP in the planning of regional events. Through a holistic approach to planning and implementation of local leadership development projects, local staff are able to replicate leadership development services in each of their high schools and middle schools. The SLP provides a replication guide, curriculum, training, planning and logistical support. The SLP Staff travel to six regions of the state serving six schools for a period of two years each. Each school is offered the opportunity to be served by SLP every four years. Schools are selected for SLP service based on an application submitted to SEMY.

Volunteer Event Staff.
Volunteer staff are trained to serve as group facilitators, speakers, role models or chaperones. Do you wish to volunteer as conference event staff? If so, go to Staff Volunteer Form or contact SLP at semy@semy.org.

Scholarships, Career Exploration and Career Preparation.
SLP staff actively advocate with others to create opportunities for migrant youth to participate in non-profit agency-sponsored career exploration events and post-secondary activities. SLP has built a rich database of and has referred hundreds of students/staff to: 1) scholarships specific to the migrant student, 2) career exploration/leadership activities conducted throughout the state, and 3) strategies to prepare for a career. For specifics, go to Scholarships, Career Exploration or Career Preparation.
